1. The Plastic data

Plastic production has sharply increased over the last 70 years. In 1950, the world produced just two million tonnes.

Global plastics production reached about 390.7 million tonnes in 2021, from the report of PlasticsEurope’s “Plastics – the Facts 2022”.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) similarly notes that over 460 million metric tons of plastic are produced annually (in recent years) for various uses.

Projections suggest that plastic use could rise from ~464 Mt in 2020 to ~884 Mt by 2050.

3. What can society do to reduce plastic pollution?

Society is taking various actions to address plastic pollution, primarily through legislation restricting the production and use of single-use plastic products and mandating waste sorting; through technological innovation, businesses are developing and promoting environmentally friendly alternatives; and through public participation in reducing single-use plastics, opting for reusable products, and actively participating in waste sorting, the public is working together to reduce the generation and harm of plastic waste.

3-1. Government Actions

  • Legislation and Regulations: Enact and enforce strict regulations on plastic pollution, restricting the use of single-use plastic products. For example, China has banned or restricted the production and sale of some single-use plastic products.
  • Waste Sorting and Treatment: Improve waste disposal systems(industrial composting equipment) and promote standardized waste sorting management.
  • Policy Guidance: Promote the research and development and application of biodegradable materials and encourage green consumption patterns.

3-2. Corporate Actions

  • Technological Innovation: Develop efficient technologies for removing plastic waste and microplastics, and promote reusable alternatives or biodegradable materials through technological research and development.
